Long days, warm evenings, vacations and no school are a few of the reasons why many people consider summer their favorite season. Summer can also be a great time to become more involved in the community, meet new friends and help others by participating in volunteer opportunities.
There are several fun and fulfilling volunteer opportunities to consider. Here are a few examples:
Operation Jump Start– Mentors, provides financial support, teaches, and volunteers to help Long Beach’s underserved youth. Volunteer opportunities include tutoring and office support.
Long Beach Rescue Mission– Provides food, clothing, shelter and spiritual guidance to the homeless and less fortunate people of the community. The Mission offers a variety of rewarding opportunities for volunteers, from food service to music, the arts, mentoring, class instruction and more.
Hospital Volunteers – Many local hospitals offer several volunteer opportunities in most areas of the hospital, including assistance at special events, blood drives, clerical reception, nursing staff support, gift shop sales, main lobby reception and support for surgical patients and their families. Teen programs are also available. Here are clinks to a few of the local hospitals’ volunteer opportunities: Long Beach Memorial Medical, Center, St. Francis Medical Center and St. Mary’s Medical Center.
The LGBTQ Center of Long Beach Provides health, legal & social services, mental health counseling, education & resources and cultural programs to help foster an ever-improving quality of life for the LGBTQ community. Volunteer positions include front desk, special events, MYTE mentor and outreach.
The above volunteer opportunities are just a sampling of some of the ways that you can “give back” this summer. Volunteermatch.org is another great resource for finding opportunities that support a specific cause.
